French train hero now in 'good spirits' after stabbing outside bar

French train hero now in 'good spirits' after stabbing outside bar
The UC Davis Medical Center upgraded Airman Spencer Stone's condition from serious to fair. Doctors say he was awake, and could get out of bed Friday.
"We know it's not related to what occurred in France," Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard said.
Stone was out with four friends when they got into a fight near a bar with another group of people, Bernard said.
The deputy chief would not disclose what sparked the argument but said there was no evidence the assailants knew who Stone was.

FWIW...Photo appears unrelated to link.

Reuters provides the following details:

Police have not said what prompted the altercation that led to the stabbing. Eric Cain, who works at a liquor store near the bar and witnessed the fight, told a local television station Stone had tried to intervene after a man punched a woman outside the bar.

Cain told the CBS Sacramento affiliate KOVR on Thursday a woman was arguing outside the bar with a man who appeared to be her boyfriend. She hit him with a plastic bag, and he then punched her in the face, Cain said.

"The big dude, the white guy, stood up and kinda got in his face," Cain said, referring to Stone.

In the fight that ensued, Stone was stabbed several times in his torso, authorities said.

"I saw the back of his shirt. I saw a big red mark on the back of his shirt, and another random person walked by, and I just kinda went, 'I think the dude got stabbed,'" Cain said.

Authorities said Thursday's stabbing was unrelated to Stone's role in the train incident and had no connection to terrorism. Stone's assailant has not been caught.

Interesting to note that a copy of the video clip titled: Police release CCTV of suspects who stabbed... has been removed because its content violated YouTube's Terms of Service.

The cache of that page doesn't reveal what detail violated those terms as noted in the link below:

Another note of potential interest...
no updates on any arrests regarding the perps involved with Spencer Stone's stabbing. The only revealed identity of someone associated with that event is a cab driver witness named "Kennedy Hailermariam". Google that identity and notice that his only presence online is his statement repeated on various media and forums. Other than the stabbing of Spencer, "Kennedy Hailermariam" has no presence online. Strange?

Thursday morning’s stabbing happened just minutes after Stone had been cheered and feted by a crowd of well-wishers at the Badlands nightclub, Ron Scharffer, Badlands promotions and media director, told The Sacramento Bee. The alleged assailants were not in the club that night, Scharffer said.

A promoter at the club introduced Spencer to the club DJ, who also is in the military. “They pulled him up onstage and introduced him to the crowd, and the crowd was cheering,” Scharffer said. “After he got on stage, everybody wanted to talk to him. The whole club was cheering.

“According to staff, he had a couple of drinks with friends – nothing too much,” Scharffer added. At that point his group left the club, the doorman saw him leave. Nothing transpired within the club.”

Police have declined to provide details of their investigation, but said in a Friday press statement that detectives are interviewing witnesses to “understand the chain of events that led to the stabbing.”

“The Sacramento Police Detective Unit, CSI and other support units are working tirelessly to identify the suspects in this case,” according to the media release. “We appreciate the immense public interest this case has generated and hope anyone with information will soon come forward.
